What This Calculator Measures
Percentage change measures movement from an original value to a new value relative to the original value.
A positive result is an increase, a negative result is a decrease, and zero means the value did not change. The order of the values matters.
Percentage Change Formula
Formula
((New value − Original value) ÷ Original value) × 100
The original value is the base or starting reference and must be greater than zero.
The sign is retained so the result communicates direction as well as magnitude.
How to Calculate It
Step-by-step method
- Subtract the original value from the new value.
- Divide the signed change by the original value.
- Multiply by 100 and interpret the sign in words.
From 80 to 100: 100 − 80 = 20.
(20 ÷ 80) × 100 = 25%, an increase.
